Removal of blue lids in uncontrolled environment

Instructions on how to open the blue lids without potentially harming your system

Last modified on Feb 24, 2025

Created date: September 21st, 2020

Introduction

Removing the lids from the robot can infringe the robot's IP54 rating. Please be aware that at any time, the blue lids of the joints, must not be opened in the field. The correct action is to take your robot arm to a controlled room where there is ventilation and no immersive particles in the air to avoid the entrance of external particle in the joints components so it doesn't affect the correct functionality of the system.

Always before performing any troubleshooting, verification or joint replacement, move your robot to a place where you have controlled and free particles, dust, dirt or liquids like oil or high humidity.

What is IP rating?

IP rating: The application must comply with an environment suited for the IP54 rating for the robot arm and IP44/IP20 for the e-Series/CB-Series control box respectively. In environments where liquids such as machine coolants or fine powders and particles are present and most likely to interact with the surface of the robot arm or control box, additional measures should be taken, such as utilizing a protective robot cover.

The picture below, shows an example of how the different Ingress Protection rating is defined. This graphic does not include duration of liquids/solids exposures.

If you are not sure about what IP rating is present at your factory environment and the needed protection for your application, please contact your distributor for assistance. The wrong environment can damage the robot’s parts resulting in Protective Stop warning messages or recurrent error codes present. If needed, there are protection covers in the UR+ and in the market that can help improve your robot's care and conservation.

NOTE: Always perform the Inspection Plan inside UR's Service Manual available in the Download section. For correct torque on the screws of the lids, please refer to the same Service Manual.

NOTE: Please use the tools advised in our Service Manual

NOTE: Always open the lids in the controlled environment using gloves, an Electric Static Discharge (ESD) wristband, and make sure there is no grease/water/particles in the hands.
