University: Korea Polytechnics Robot Campus

Robot Campus of Korea Polytechnics University is the first Korean university to specialize in robotics. The campus opened in 2021 with the aim of accelerating the learning and development of industry professionals as production technology converges with the field of robotics.
The university chose UR cobots for its classrooms due to three factors; market share, durability and usability. Furthermore, the Robot Campus found the UR Academy curriculum to be a very appealing training platform. In addition to teaching its own students, the university is now also an authorized training partner, providing UR Academy and UR cobot training to industry professionals and students from other universities.

During the pandemic, Korea’s production environment rapidly changed, resulting in continuous unemployment for the graduate students. As a response, the Robot Campus of Korea Polytechnics University reorganized departments to respond to the continuing unemployment crisis and to keep up with Industry 4.0 requirements, preparing the workforce of today and tomorrow for this shift by furthering their robotics knowledge and capabilities.

Specialized learning in robotics

The Robot Campus is comprised of multiple departments focused on teaching machinery, electronics, automation, and IT, which are core technologies for the production and operation of robots in order to nurture technical knowledge and capability in the field of robot operation.

The online UR Academy modules became the key curriculum in the Robot Campus’ classes on Universal Robots. The modules teach the basics of operating collaborative robots and is now part of the core training for all students, quickly becoming an important course that sets their university apart from others. “Universal Robots are easy to learn, unlike traditional industrial robots, so there is not as much of a learning barrier for students new to robots,” says Kong, Jae Sung, Professor at Korea Polytechnics University.

“As an official educational institution that has signed a contract with the UR Academy, we also offer short-term courses for people from business or other universities,” says Kong Jae Sung, professor at Korea Polytechnics University. “We have 8 out of 9 robots used for students’ hands-on practice and this is the largest collaborative robots training facility in Korea.” Students are now learning with the UR Academy, acquiring basic safety, operation and connectivity technology skills with industrial devices deployed in the industry.

An exciting educational experience

“I felt comfortable while learning about UR Polyscope programming. I was able to learn what’s needed in the industry and deliver it right away,” says Lee Byeong Jun, student at the Robot Campus at Korea Polytechnics. “Even if I made a mistake, the robot showed steady movements, making me feel safe during hands-on practice.”

Another student, Park Ju Huyn, calls the learning experience ‘quite exciting’: “Unlike the conventional training approach that pushed students to blindly follow, UR training programs offered me the opportunity to think on my own,” he says. “As I solved given assignments, I could feel a sense of accomplishment. Most of all, learning practical skills actually applicable in industrial settings gave me a sense of confidence.”
