Archytas Robotics , a certified Universal Robots integrator based in Noé in the Occitanie region, has developed an automated medical parts engraving solution for VCN Industries. Integrated into the latter's production site in Sigoulès-et-Flaugeac in the Dordogne region, the cobotic cell operates autonomously, day and night. The solution has improved the working conditions of operators, enabled work in hidden time and increased the company's productivity.

Automating Precision with Care

Eager to support its growth and concerned about the well-being of its employees, VCN Industries wanted to automate its medical parts engraving operation, particularly small dental implants.

Specifically, the operator assigned to the workstation had to retrieve the loose parts one by one, to present them for laser marking, before placing them in a blister pack. This was a particularly meticulous and tedious operation, with relatively slow cycle times; the medical field is demanding in terms of precision. This task, due to its repetitive nature, also presented risks of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) for the operator.

Therefore, after investing in a new laser marking machine, VCN Industries was looking for a solution capable of handling this operation completely autonomously, with the main objective of increasing productivity, particularly by carrying out the operation at night. The full integration of the solution within this marking station also represented a major challenge.

The company therefore contacted Universal Robots' certified integrator (CSI) Archytas Robotics to meet this objective.

How they did it

Seamless automation with cobotic precision

Archytas Robotics then developed, in collaboration with CIR (Universal Robots distributor), a complete station based on a UR5e cobot - equipped with a Schunk gripper -, an Asyril power supply system supplied by Sysaxes, and a drawer system. This station received CE marking from the safety organization Socotec.

Since then, this cobotic solution, tailored to VCN Industries' needs, has operated as follows. The parts to be engraved are placed by the operator in the Asyril system's stainless steel hopper. The latter vibrates to drop some into a white platform, called the Asycube. A camera checks that the parts are present and compliant and, if necessary, requests a supply.

Once parts are detected in the Asycube, their coordinates are sent to the cobot, which can then retrieve one of them precisely using the Schunk gripper. It then recenters it on a pin—or mechanical centering device—and presents it to the laser marking machine.

Once the engraving is complete, the finished piece is placed in a blister pack. The process is then repeated for the following pieces until the blister pack is full.

To master the solution and record new recipes themselves, the operators received just one week of training from Archytas Robotics.

Precision, productivity, and operator empowerment

The cobotic solution implemented by Archytas Robotics, and perfectly integrated with the engraving machine, fully meets the expectations of VCN Industries.

In fact, the company is now completely autonomous at this station, which now produces night-time runs. The solution has significantly reduced marking errors and engraves up to 30,000 parts per month. The result: a productivity gain of around 50%.

Furthermore, since the cobot now supports more than thirty references, operators see their task lightened, which on the one hand has significantly reduced the risks of MSDs, and on the other hand now allows them to focus on operations with higher added value.

Over time, the solution will be able to mark more series of parts to gradually free the operator from this tedious task. Recently, Archytas Robotics integrated a Keyence camera into the device, which allows 100% dimensional control before marking.
