USB Update Procedure

Prerequisites

This procedure requires a USB storage device that is detectable by Windows and is FAT32 formatted.

If the storage device is not FAT32 formatted, perform the following procedures:

  • You might need admin privileges to perform the procedure.

  • Back up any important data on the USB storage device before formatting. The process will erase all existing information.

  1. Connect the USB to your computer.

  2. Open File Explorer.

  3. Right-click on the USB drive and select Format.

  4. In the format window, select Restore device defaults.

  5. In the Volume label, specify the robot's product line as shown in the following table.

e-Series and UR Series Generation 3
    Standard G3
    UR20 CB3
  6. Select Start to begin formatting.

  7. Confirm any warning messages.

15-step process
  1. On your robot, go to About and check your current software version.

  1. Download the software versions you need to install to your computer from Universal Robots' website (www.universal-robots.com/support).
    • If your software is below 5.5 (for example, 5.3), you must update incrementally until you reach 5.5 (for example, 5.3 to 5.4, then 5.4 to 5.5). After you update to software 5.5, you can download the most up-to-date software and update directly from 5.5 to the latest version (for example, 5.5 to 5.8).
    • If your software is 5.5 or higher, download the most recent software version file and install it directly from your current software version (for example, 5.5 to 5.8).
  2. Download the software version(s) needed to update your software and save the file(s) in the root of a USB drive on your computer.
  3. Insert the USB drive into the USB slot in the Control Box.
  1. On the teach pendant screen, tap the hamburger menu icon  to open the settings menu.

  1. Tap Settings to open the settings menu.

  1. On the left-side menu, tap System.

  1. Tap Update, then tap Search to locate the software update on the USB drive.

  1. Select the desired software update and tap Update.

  1. Tap Install Software to update the software.

  1. The robot powers off and powers on again. Once the update is complete, the Control Box automatically reboots. Do not power off or unplug the robot from the outlet during startup.
  2. Wait until the reboot is complete. The firmware for the Control Box and Teach Pendant is updated.
  3. When the reboot is complete, go to the Initialize screen and tap ON. If a joint firmware update is available, it starts.

  1. Remove the USB drive.
  2. If necessary, repeat steps 4 to 14 until you reach the most recent version.

From software version 5.5 and later, you can install the most recent version available on UR’s website directly; there is no need to incrementally install updates.
