Universal Robots Powers DripBot, DessertBot and DrinkBot
01 IN SHORT
Café BOTBOTBOT located in Seongsu-dong, Seoul is a robot café built by T-Robotics, a robot company based in Korea. You can meet Dripbot that brews coffee, Dessertbot that draws on top of desserts and Drinkbot that makes cocktails for customers. This café is an interesting space where robots and humans work side-by-side with emotionally rich design art walls attracting a constant stream of customers.
T-Robotics introduced UR robots to help staff more efficiently respond to the needs of customers while making hand drip coffee, decorating cakes, and mixing cocktails that usually take some time in preparation. The idea was to let robots take care of repetitive and time-consuming tasks to allow staff to focus on communicating with customers, developing recipes, and doing other creative work. As a result, the company was able to enhance productivity by controlling quality of customer service, foods, and drinks while improving the working conditions for the staff.
Staff working at café usually take care of multiple tasks at the same time such as serving customers, tidying, and cleaning while preparing foods and drinks. Two to four people work together during the same shift busily taking care of time-consuming tasks such as making hand drip coffee, drawing on cakes and mixing cocktails while attending to customers. Sometimes foods and beverages served lack consistency in quality as several people do the same job together. In addition, the speed of working varies depending on the level of skills staff have and the taste of coffee and cocktails also changes whenever there is staff change.
Before opening the café, T-Robotics considered these common challenges you face in running a café and sought for a new solution.

T-Robotics, a company specializing in robots came up with the idea of people and robots working together at a café by making use of collaborative robots-or cobots-from Universal Robots (UR). The company introduced two UR3 cobots with a payload of 3kg and one UR5 with a payload of 5kg and opened a café totally different from conventional ones. The cobots were assigned repetitive and time-consuming tasks to allow staff to spend more time actually serving and communicating with customers. This enabled staff to focus on jobs that add values like developing new recipes. By allowing robots and staff to work together, Café BOTBOTBOT was able to enhance the quality of customer service and food not to mention the working environment.
“Unlike other machines, cobots are easy to transport as they are small and light and also easily programmable so café staff with no technical background can quickly learn how to operate them” says Sung-Woo Kim, Technical Sales Team Manager of T-ROBOTICS.
“One of the major factors considered before introducing cobots was safety because in contrast to industrial robots, cobots can work together with people in the same space. UR robots are one of the safest robots, and their safety systems are certified by TUV Nord, the most prestigious certifying body in Europe for meeting their cobots safety requirements.” explains Sung-Woo Kim why they choose the UR cobots.

The UR3-based Dripbot uses an exact drip algorithm to make coffee with consistent taste. It can brew six cups of coffee at the same time and it takes only three minutes to brew a cup of coffee and five minutes to make three cups. The names of beans being extracted, and the extraction process are visible on a display placed at the top of the Dripbot, adding the joy of watching for customers.
The UR3-based Dessertbot draws a picture with chocolate syrup over the top of a mousse cake. It can design and draw what customers ask for on the spot and it only takes about 30 seconds. The cake decorated by the Dessertbot is ideal as an anniversary gift because customers can put the picture and message they want over the cake.
The UR5-based Drinkbot is connected to a drink extractor, carbonated water, and an ice dispenser. It takes about three minutes for the Drinkbot to make a cup and it can make various kinds of drinks in exact quantity. On top of that, it is even capable of washing cups. It can offer different kinds of drinks depending on the season and the concept of the café as it is capable of making a new drink if you just simply enter a recipe.
